Day Trip
to Astoria
Following History with the Lewis & Clark Expedition

There are pretty coastlines like those of Southern California, Texas and North Carolina, and there are spectacular coastlines like those in Oregon, Washington, the Mediterranean and Chili.

The Astoria Sunday Drive takes you from the suburbs of Portland Oregon through the Coastal Range, into quaint ocean side resort towns like Seaside and the fishing town of Astoria.  It visits many of the historic sites and destinations of eighteenth- nineteenth century explorers Lewis and Clark.

Once leaving Astoria you'll accompany North America's second largest river, the Columbia as it winds toward Portland.  You'll pass through dozens of small towns where mining, logging and farming are a way of life.  At times you'll think you are traveling through the Blue Mountains of West Virginia, but only until you see massive Mt. St. Helens gracing the horizon.  TOP

This is a full day trip from Portland.  You'll want to leave time for shopping in Seaside, a picnic lunch on Sunset Beach and a trip to the top of the Astoria Column at sunset. TOP

Golf enthusiasts can play a round adjacent to the Pacific Ocean at Seaside's public golf course.

ATV sportsmen can take on miles of flat beach at Sunset Beach or go for the Challenge on the Columbia River at Johns Beach.

Fishing is plentiful (you'll need a license) either on the Ocean or along one of the many tributaries to the Columbia.  If camping is more your style, this drive passes several traditional campgrounds in addition to RV friendly sites.

Communing with mother nature not your style?  Astoria and Seaside both have several motels and Bed & Breakfast Inns.  Both towns are weekend hideaway destinations for residents of Portland and Salem Oregon. TOP

THE ROUTE:
Beginning at NW 185th & HWY 26 (Sunset HWY) in NW Beaverton (14 miles west of Downtown Portland) you'll enter the the Sunset Highway going west.

Once on the Sunset Highway you'll be traveling the next 90 miles on this highway.  Hit it before noon (it's called the Sunset Highway because the sun sets right on it and after 2PM you'll have the sun in your eyes).

Ten miles into the trip you'll have your first decision.  The highway splits at the foothills.  You can choose to take the left fork (HWY 6) and detour to Tillamook (Home of the Tillamook Dairy with daily tours) and pick up highway 101 and go north to Astoria (this adds about 120 miles to the trip) or you can continue by taking the right fork on Sunset Highway.  We continued up the Sunset for this trip.
