Intimacy is as simple as a couple holding hands
Not just any couple, but a mature man and woman, walking down a tree-lined brownstone street holding hands as the street-light reflected their forms on the sidewalk. It was a sight that I just had to verify. Could this couple be so in love after all these years? Is it possible to set aside any quarrels that may have cropped-up from decades of living and loving together? I would very quickly find out.
I have a special fondness for older couples that exhibit this kind of intimacy. It gives me hope and a sense of calm when I see people like this in action. Beyond the anger of divorcing couples, the pain of split families and the inevitable tug of war that goes on about money and for the control of children, I get inspired to ask them what it is that allowed them to be so successful as a couple? I know my kids would be horrified by my approaching complete strangers, but the lessons that we can learn from individuals like this, to better our own marriages, dating or partnerships, is potentially to valuable to ignore.
