Geeklove Gifts For Valentine's Day by Lorne Caplan

Monday, February 13, 2012

Everyone needs a little love in their lives and Valentine's Day is certainly not the day for this exception. That is why we found a number of solutions for those folks who may not find a romantic dinner with some roses and balloons to fit their Valentine's Day needs.

One option for the ever scientific type is to go to the Love X Infinity Weekend  at the Chabot Space and Science Center. You can fly a simulated space mission,  see Venus the goddess of love who will make an appearance and enjoy a live planetarium show to cap the evening off. If you can't get there for the special event, then get a telescope and gaze at the stars and identify the constellations together. What can be more romantic?

You might also want to get intimate with your special lady and for that there is no better gift than lingerie that says I love cartoons and technology. Some samples include Pokemon and the glow in the dark Tron inspired version. That way, you won't need your 3-D glasses in the dark.

You can also buy your special someone a sexy little USB memory stick or even get a little retro and record what's on your mind or music list like music geeks from the 1980's on a tape, with a USB stick included to show that you've actually modernized!

Instead of getting a locket like folks did in the 19th and 20th century to remind your love of your affection for them, you can now have similar thoughts or images of your love emblazoned on an iPhone case. Whenever you hold the phone, look at it and speak on it. you can get that stalking feeling from your special someone who will be reminding you of how they feel... all the time.

If you both enjoy using your phones and spend lots of time looking at each others apps, then why not bundle together a group of apps that you can actually share. Some might say it's cheap, but at around $0.99 to start, you can get between 10-20 and spend the evening loading and subscribing for them. What can be more romantic?

If you are expressive and want to share your illustrating genius, you can check-out the various personalized t-shirt companies that will give you ideas galore to warm up to your honey for Valentine's Day or any other day that you get creative and want to share your latest poetry or patent pending idea. You might even take a picture of the two of you and emblazon it on a shirt for posterity.

You don't have to be a nerd to love these little guys and you might even consider yourself a hipster, but ultimately, few have appreciated urban vinyl designer toys despite having taken off in North America in the last ten years. Here are some selections for you to consider when wanting to share your love and affection this special romance season.

Jewelry is always a nice way to express your affection and when you can add some great geeky cartoons, vintage video game symbols or manga characters, then they'll surely be a hit. Earrings, rings, necklaces or even cuff links will all be appreciated and you can relive your youth and first painful crick in your thumb, together. Or simply show your true trekkie or engineering skills, perhaps with a pair of capacitor earrings?

Sure there are plenty of cards that might have robots, maps, glasses, computers and other stereotypical geeky images on them, but keep in mind that most geeks have done away with their pocket protectors and multiple leaky pens. Now, they are using iPads and iPhones and you can bring a tear to your loved ones eyes by giving them the gift of a happy memory with covers evoking images of vintage Gameboys and other games long gone, but never quite gone.

You might want to get a little traditional by buying chocolate, but don't miss the opportunity to give them a character that they can identify with. You might consider this lovely chocolate space invader and don't forget to share it with that special someone.

Of course, chocolates aren't the only traditional Valentine's Day gift, so why not consider buying flowers? Just don't go with the ordinary and instead give her a bouquet of Lego flowers. What can be more romantic and scream creativity and dexterity at the same time?

Within that same spirit of building, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to let your special someone create their own unique scent.  It used to cost hundreds or more for a signature perfume to be created, but with a variety of online companies like Scent Design, Crate Your Own Fragrance and Perfume Lab, you don't have to buy a bunch of essential oil, alcohol and glycerin for an at home lab experiment anymore. Or... is that what you wanted to do in the first place?
