We often hear about romanticizing certain periods of history and memories that we turn into positives rather than negatives. This effort is also being made on a daily basis by companies that make every effort to use the word romance to entice us to buy a product or service. So how do these companies convince us that they can bring romance into our lives?

We are led to believe that romance comes to us far easier if we appear as someone else, especially if we don a Gothic costume, make-up and attitude. Why is it that hoards of people flock to those who wear Gothic fashion and exhibit the same attitude, yet refuse to participate in the sub-cultures characteristics themselves?  Avatar creating websites like IMVU and Second life that exploded onto the internet in around 2007, let people outfit themselves with that very same Goth look and it was used liberally. Essentially allowing people to free themselves just as they would on Halloween.
