What these game do: Entertains
and develop hand-eye coordination, speed and agility.
What you need:
-
Badminton or Volleyball Net (or a clothesline
suspended between posts)
-
One-Gallon Milk Jug per Player
-
Tennis ball or Racquetball
-
Cones, chalk, rope or markers to define
playing area
Cut out the bottoms of the
milk jugs. These are the racquets, only they are scoops. Mark out
the playing area. Each side of the net has a court is the width
of the net and ten feet deep.

On a Court
or Pavement: Milk Jug Minton
(2-4 players)
Milk Jug Minton is played
like tennis and badminton where the ball is allowed to hit the
court one time before being returned over the net. Use the same
rules as tennis or badminton, only instead of racquets you are
playing with milk jugs.

On Grass or
Sand: Milk Jug Volleyball:
(2-10 players)
On grass, play the game a
little differently since balls don’t bounce too well. In this
case you use the rules of volleyball with the same objectives and
scoring.
Server tosses the ball over
the net with the jug. The other side can contact the ball 3 times
before sending it back over the net. If it hits the ground, the
team that didn’t let it hit the ground gets the point.

Milk Jug Water Tag: Any number
of Players
(You’ll need a kiddy pool or trough to use as the
well)
If it’s a hot day, surprise
them at the end with a tub of water and let them chase each other
around by scooping up water and tossing it on each other in an
inventive game of tag. For water tag, one child “guards” the
water well with his own jug or squirt gun and tries to prevent
the other children from scooping up water to douse others with.
He that remains driest, wins. This also water’s your lawn.
The great thing about these
games is that you don’t need the professional equipment, even
adults will be challenged, (it’s a bit awkward if you’re use to
racquets and volleyball, but that is half the fun) and children
will stay occupied, outside, getting exercise for sometime.
