LIBERAL INDEPENDENT CELEBRITIES KINDLY ASSISTING REPUTATIONS SOARING EXTENSIVELY (LICKARSE)
by Richard Oxman

LICKARSE, an independent international organization devoted to keeping tabs on celebrities who personally benefit from PRing their contributions to worthy causes (more than those they help), has come out with its List Of Worst (LOW) for 2004.  Take five.

They are (in no special order, in keeping with their "no special" contributions):

1. U2's Bono for leading a pack of fresh-faced British rockers in a new rendition of the 80s "Do They Know It's Christmas," the ignorant, condescending ditty devoted to raising money for starving Africans.  It's a project "which cannot disguise the fact that it is one of the worst songs ever written and performed," according to The Independent's Joan Smith.  She meant that, in part, in terms of its presumptuous stance vis-a-vis Africans, which compounds ignorance with ignorance for the general public.  Bono compiled insult upon insult by tussling with Justin Hawkins of The Darkness (over who had the right to deliver a particular line), making the contribution more one of ego enhancement than one concerned with African victims.  Even in 1984 --let alone at a time when Islam is at the top of the Neocons genocidal political agenda-- it was hard to believe that starving Africans had given a passing thought to Santa, as Muslims.  A+ for Bono (and all those involved) for Cultural Insensitivity.

2.  Michael Stipe of REM for focusing on himself (in a recent Jay Leno Tonight Show appearance) instead of taking the opportunity to underscore how he felt regarding the political scene. His saying that the outcome of the 2004 campaign (which he was heavily invested in) was "alright," when the host offered condolences respecting its electoral results, was unconscionable.  The highly lauded lyricist had not a foul word for Kerry's behavior...or anything else despicable that had transpired on his end, on his watch.  And still the question lingers:  What he hell is he doing collaborating with John Malkovich?  (See Press Action and you'll see why he'll get no stipends from me.)

3.  Michael Moore, documentary filmmaker, for putting on a monkey suit to appear on Leno's show (post-Election), harping on how he and Jay could play through the coming years as they personally weren't going to be affected by Bush's re-election in a negative way; he actually delineated how he had raked it in financially in 2004, showing absolutely no signs of compassion for others, no mention of fraudulent shenanigans at the polls, and no concern for the future...in stark contrast to the P-Ditty "Pay or Die" stance he had adopted for months leading up to the electoral abomination.  Support of Wesley Clark helped.

4.  Tim Robbins, Cinematic Idol, for supporting the invasion of Afghanistan on one of the last Phil Donahue shows...and throughout 2004 whenever intimidated by journalists on The Right.

5.  Al Franken for his disgusting, unnecessary cheap shots at Muslims and Islam, taking the low road consistently simply for laughs.  And for using his star power to encourage the huge (little known left club) Apologists for Clinton.

Lest left-leaning individuals think the "contributions" above are of little significance, let me remind the reader that little things mean a lot.  Add the above to the mix of more than a hundred such horrors on LICKARSE's list, and you've got the basis for swinging the current cultural tide.  By everyone ignoring the 2004 electoral fraud alone, they've guaranteed that the public will never get their hands on the damning definitive documentation that was collected, never get over their delusions about the decency of our democracy.  Fixed for now...and the forseeable future.
