The Miracle Menorah
of
San Diego |
|
SAN DIEGO, Dec. 10, 2003: -- This Chanukah the
miracle of the menorah has particular significance to the
students and community members of the Chabad Educational
Campus in Scripps Ranch San Diego. Their 30-foot menorah
was the only thing left standing in the wildfires that
destroyed their old campus.

October's devastating fires resulted in the destruction
of an entire school campus, including classrooms,
administrative offices and a synagogue, that had been home to
350 pre-school and elementary school children.
The Chabad
Hebrew Academy was the only school, religious or not, to
burn and lose everything in San Diego County. Rabbi Yonah
Fradkin, however, feels despite the loss, a miracle occurred
that day as the fire swept within 10 feet of the construction
site of their new school and passed right over it, destroying
the old campus and leaving the new unharmed.
"That day began as one of the darkest day I have known," said
Fradkin. "To think that all the hard work and effort of so
many people was going to be destroyed within a matter of
minutes was devastating to us all. But when we returned to the
site to see the menorah standing amongst the ruins of our
former campus and looked up the hill to find that our new
structure went unharmed, I knew it was more than luck. It was
simply a miracle."
Dubbed by the congregation as the "Miracle Menorah," it is the
largest sculptural menorah in Southern California, presiding
over the former campus that during construction of the new
facility, had housed temporary trailers for classrooms.
"Everything else on that part of the land was destroyed -- our
classrooms, school supplies, the kids' playground equipment
melted to nothing, even our school bus was completely
engulfed," said Fradkin. "The menorah stood there, unscathed
by the fires, as if it was protecting the new campus. It was
such a powerful symbol of faith and resilience. It has set the
tone for how we must move forward to recover from this
tragedy."
Although city officials and the construction company were able
to fast-track partial completion of the new buildings to allow
for school to restart two short weeks after the fires
subsided, Chabad still has much work to do to recoup the
nearly quarter of a million dollars worth of computer
equipment, school supplies and textbooks lost.
"We are so grateful to the community for their continued
generosity and support during this difficult time, and though
there is still work to be done, we feel confident that we will
be stronger than ever," said Fradkin. "As we approach
Chanukah, I hope everyone stops to witness the small miracles
that happen each day. Though they often go unnoticed, their
impact is huge, and we are proof of that."
