Newsroom 101
Exercises in Grammar
Usage & Associated Press Style

Newsroom 101 is created by Ron Hartung of the Tallahassee Democrat- grammar consultant and newsroom coach and Dr. Gerald Grow professor of journalism at Florida A&M University. Newsroom 101 has a total of 31 ten question,  interactive quizzes.  What we love about it is it teaches both when you answer a question correctly and incorrectly.  For example:

Whether you're an executive needing a quick brush up or an eighth grade student looking for an edge in the classroom, Newsroom 101 is a phenomenal resource and excellent learning tool.  It's even fun!

Question: We chose "A" and got a happy face,
indicating it was the correct answer.

2
Shall we agree ______________?

  in principle
  in principal

Above the answer the reason why this is
the correct answer is displayed.

Correct!
By the principle or ideal involved,
not by the principal of the high school.

By the way, how many of you would have said "on" principle instead of "in" principle?

Many of the exercises apply to English in general, but note that some of them apply only to journalistic language as governed by The Associated Press Stylebook and may differ from standard English usage.

When an explanation refers to "the official dictionary," that is Webster's New World College Dictionary, the AP's first reference for anything not covered in the Stylebook itself.  These are the first five quizzes.  Visit Newsroom 101 for the rest!
