Decker Canyon, Malibu California

Beginning on Southern California’s Pacific Coast Highway 1 at the northern edge of Malibu (El Pascador State Beach), this winding, mountainous journey provides breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountain Range.

Noted on the map as Route 23 (Thomas Brothers LA County 2000 maps 626 & 586), Decker Canyon provides traffic weary Angelinos with rural splendor, hiking trails, secluded picnic spots and access to several national recreation areas.

Getting to the highway is just as much fun, arriving via the world famous Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu or from the San Fernando Valley via the Ventura freeway. Shopping is plentiful throughout Malibu and dining ranges from exclusive romantic restaurants like the Chart House or Geoffrey’s in Malibu and the Beach House in Santa Monica to everyday beach wear venues like Gladstone's in Pacific Palisades.

Casual attire is accepted at most beach city restaurants. Geoffrey's recommends reservations for Sunday Brunch.

Points of Interest

  • Santa Monica Pier & Amusement Park: 5 miles into drive, (this is the amusement park "Rose" is pictured on a horse in front of at the end of the movie Titanic)

  • Gladstone's: Consistently LA's top grossing restaurant. 10 miles at PCH & Sunset Blvd.

  • Pepperdine University: 23 miles, Malibu

  • Geoffrey's Restaurant: Hit it at sunset and dine outdoors overlooking the Pacific. 25 miles, Malibu

  • Paradise Cove: Great picnic area on the beach and the place where The Rockford Files was shot. 26 Miles, Malibu

  • Several Hiking Trails and Parks along the route

Warnings: Severe blind curves, single lane each direction and very narrow road.  Not recommended for RV's, trailers or bicycles.  Make sure your brakes are in top shape.

This is my favorite Drive in Los Angeles and the one I take when I need to think or just escape.  It takes in all of the elements: Mountains, Desert, Ocean and the City.  I love the fact that I can eat dinner at Geoffrey's and watch the sunset over the Islands at the end of the drive if I come through the valley.  Then there's the curves!  Twenty-tree miles of wonderful switchbacks that challenge a stick and invigorate the driver.  Though just twenty minutes outside of Los Angeles proper, Decker Canyon allows any Angelino a day escape from crowded roads, congestion and the day-to-day stresses of city living!"
