In October 2001, Dr. Mark led a
workshop on HOW TO LEAD THROUGH
FEAR to a group of CEO's. At issue: How to deal with the fear and
uncertainty within themselves and their employees instigated by the
attacks on American and international business interests. What Dr.
Mark and the rest of the room noticed as the presentation progressed was
how much the fear and anxiety in the room diminished and was replaced
with a greater sense of connecting to replace the feelings of isolation
that many had been feeling.
Dr. Mark concluded the reason why this workshop was so effective came
down to three simple ideas. When dealing with fear generated by such a
visually horrendous events, the only words the fearful person wants to
hear are: TOP
1) It's
completely safe
2) It'll never happen again
3) It never happened in the first place
(it really was a bad
dream)
|
|
He also concluded that since we are
unable to sincerely say those words, another tact is required when
dealing with frightened individuals. That tact is getting them to punch
themselves out by talking their way out of their fear, anger, etc.
(analogous to draining the pus).
This is the same short action plan Dr. Mark delivered
to American CEO's and executives after the September 11th attacks on the
free world. The same principles can help you in your home life
(leading your family and children) or in your career, anytime you
encounter a situation of uncertainty, fear or terror.

Dr. Mark's Action Plan
for Leading through Fear:
|
|
Step 1)
Turn Quitting
into Perseverance (about tenacity and patience)
Talk about something that you never thought you would get through, but
hung in there and made it through.
Step
2) Turn Can’t do into Can do
(about capability)
Talk about something you were convinced you couldn’t do, but then were
able to do
Step
3)
Turn Negative into Positive
(about gratitude and
wanting to give back)
Talk about someone you’re grateful to. Who they were, what they did and
what it meant to you.
|
|
Step 4)
Turn Self-absorbed into Helping others (about focusing on others)
Talk about a person such as your child, spouse, parent, friend,
co-worker who accomplished or overcame something that made you proud and
want to help them accomplish more.
Step
5) Shed Wait to do for Will do NOW
(about taking action vs.
delaying too long)
Talk about something you waited too long to do, and wished you had done
earlier.
