INTERACTIONS
|
|
St. John’s Wort
|
Short-term treatment for mild or
moderate depression |
Because it can significantly
increase the metabolism of many drugs which are
excreted through the liver, it can interact with some
narcotic pain relievers, benzodiazepines (valium-like
drugs), and most importantly, coumadin and blood
thinning drugs. Note: Discontinue this medication at
least 5 days prior to any surgical procedures, as
problems with excessive bleeding may occur.

|
Echinacea
|
Activation of immune system
|
Short term usage may increase the
immune system, however LONG TERM usage of Echinacea
will actually decrease the effectiveness of the immune
system. Patients who are on medication (immuno-suppressants
for autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid
arthritis, tuberculosis, lupus, multiple sclerosis,
and HIV) should be monitored very closely for side
effects and problems with their medications.

|
|
Valerian
|
Sedative used for insomnia |
Because it acts like a
benzodiazepine (valium-like sedative), withdrawal
effects may occur. These withdrawal effects can
include fatigue, tremor, headache, and paradoxical
insomnia.
TOP
|
|
Ginseng
|
General health improvement with
sexual function athletic ability, and others |
High doses may cause diarrhea,
hypertension, insomnia and nervousness. Be
particularly careful if you are on blood thinning
medications, as it could affect coumadin function and
bleeding disorders.
TOP
|
|
Gingko Biloba
|
Dementia, cognitive improvement,
memory |
Mild gastrointestinal distress,
headache, and like St. John’s Wort or Ginseng,
bleeding could be a problem. May also interact with
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and
diuretic (water-pill) medications.
TOP
|
|
Goldenseal
|
Upper respiratory infections,
common cold |
Diarrhea, hypertension with
elevated and prolonged doses.
TOP |
|
Garlic
|
Lowering blood pressure,
reversing coronary artery diseases and lowering
cholesterol levels |
Gastrointestinal upset, gas, and
anticoagulant effects. With it’s anti-platelet
activity, it’s important to watch for bleeding
problems, particularly when on coumadin.
TOP |
|
Ephedra
(Ma Huang)
|
Weight loss, diet |
Like it’s pharmacologic companion
ephedrine, the greatest risk lies with elevated blood
pressures, heart palpitations, and possible strokes
and heart attack.
