“Before I studied the art, a punch to me was just a punch,
a kick was just a kick. After I’d studied the art, a
punch was no longer a punch, a kick was no longer a kick.
Now that I understand the art, a punch is just a punch, a
kick is just a kick”

Self-defense vs
Martial Arts:
In any self-defense class you learn one action at a time, perform that action repeatedly until it becomes second nature, instinct. To presume that any short amount of lesson can teach you how to properly protect yourself would be irresponsible, both on the part of both the student and the teacher.

Can you
defend yourself
against a criminal attach? |

So with the understanding that this information is intended for the individual who is currently enrolled in a defense class and to be treated as a supplement not a replacement to the personal teachings of the class. The first thing that must be
realized about personal defense is that it’s a state of mind,
not a physical capability.
An assailant is more likely to
attack a when he feels as though he has the upper hand, in
strength size or number. So many times you can defuse a
possible attack by showing the illusion of strength, this is
in some cases as good as the reality of it. Now I’m not
saying go around with a fake iron bar and pretend to be
Superman, but merely take the attitude of strength. Stand up
when you walk, keep your eyes scouting for possibilities.
Generally the bad guy doesn’t want a fight if he did he’d find
someone who’s ready for it. He wants a victim, an easy victim
To counter the balance of
strength and size you need to have speed and be conscious of
your actions. A quick strike to the groin, or a well placed
car key to the tender spot at the corner of the jaw under the
ear will give you the distraction you need to scream (and I
mean loudly) and run. |
