Hi, Wondering Jullie:
It sounds to me as if they're scared until they know
you're friendly. Some of their response to you could be
cultural -- they might be trying to be "macho." Do these
men respond to your female friends in the same manner?

If you're physically very attractive, it will increase the
"macho" response of the men. They're most likely worried
about being rejected, and when they see you aren't rejecting,
they calm down.
Take your time with men who come at you this way. You need to
sort out the nice guys who are just anxious from the really
aggressive ones. Be wary of someone who is charming when he
wants something, and very angry when he is disappointed. This
is a danger sign. But, if a man is just uptight at first and
then relaxes into a genuinely nice (but not too perfect) kind
of guy, you're probably OK.
